After fifteen NFL seasons, and a Super Bowl Title, Michael Strahan is retiring. The single season sack king announced Monday that he will call it a career. Strahan ends his career ranked fifth on the all-time sack list with 141.5, which is a Giants team record.
Now, as the title indicates, the Giants have a huge gap (pardon the pun) to fill. The team is expected to move Justin Tuck into the starting role, and he could be dominant right away. Tuck showed his versatility last season, as he moved inside to tackle on passing downs.
This is a big loss for the Champs, as well as the league, as Strahan was largely popular and will be greatly missed. Strahan made the right choice, and at the right time. This was a good move on his part, as the Giants can now move on without him. Tuck will benefit from a full training camp with the starters, and the Giants can scour through the roster to find a new backup.
Just for the record, I'm not ruling out a potential comeback for Strahan, who toyed with retirement last summer only to return. This year is different, as his team now has a title to defend. Oh well, Tiki stayed away, and so will Strahan. (Tiki references in back-to-back days)
-> The Texans have released QB Quinn Gray, only two months after signing him to compete for the backup role. They obviously want Gray to have a successful career, and he would have been buried on the depth chart with the Texans. The Texans are expected to find a younger, developmental type player to fill the #3 QB role.
-> WR Marcus Washington has retired as a member of the Chicago Bears. Robinson enjoyed a decent career, and had his best season in 1999 with the Bears. He has also spent time with the Lions, Ravens and Vikings.
-> Another day, another player saying he may skip training camp because of contract issues. Seahawks WR Bobby Engram is the man today, and it appears he wants more money. So, let me get this straight. Engram, pretty much a career #3 WR, has one good season (90 catches, 1147 years) and he wants more money. He is set to make $1.7 million, and is in the last year of his contract. So, as I have been saying to every player who is threatening to hold out: GO AND EARN YOUR MONEY! If you want more money, play that last year of your contract and EARN IT. Engram is 36, so it's no wonder the Seahawks aren't rushing to re-sign him.
Jeez, this is getting tiring, writing the same thing every day.
So long to Big 'Ol Michael Strahan.
Criminal Counter: 7 --- It's kind of a stretch, but ex-NFLer Ken Stabler was arrested today on charges of reckless driving and DUI.
