Mock Draft Take Two

1. Detroit Lions select Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia
As much as I think they shouldn't, I think they will. Stafford has the potential to be the Lions QB of the future. They do have to decide between him and Mark Sanchez, who is rocketing up draft boards. I think they go with Stafford based on his starting experience.
2. St Louis Rams select Jason Smith, OT, Baylor
The Rams could go with Aaron Curry here, but I think they have a more pressing need at OT. Smith is the most sure thing at the position, but they could go with Eugene Monroe instead. They might also look to trade down and get more value picks later on.
3. Kansas City Chiefs select Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest
The Chiefs have had a great offseason, and it gets better with possibly the best player available. They will love to have Curry fall here, as he immediately adds to their defence. Another way they could go would be selecting a WR like Michael Crabtree, but that is a reach here.
4. Seattle Seahawks select Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia
The Seahawks really don't have a need at OT, but Walter Jones replacement must be found soon. They will be very tempted my WR Michael Crabtree with this pick as well, but can't pass on the beefy Monroe. Expect them to attempt to trade down.
5. Cleveland Browns select Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas
The Browns have a bunch of needs (CB, WR, DE), but DE is the only one they should address at this spot. Orakpo is the best all-around rusher in the draft, and the only one that even compares is Everette Brown. The Browns will also be considering a guy like RB Chris Wells.
6. Cincinnati Bengals select Andre Smith, OT, Alabama
There are sooo many needs on this team they can't know where to start. I had Smith falling a bit in my last draft, but I feel the Bengals should take him here. I think they could go after a pass rusher like Everette Brown, but there are rushers later in the draft that would be a good choice.
7. Oakland Raiders select Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech
The Raiders need help pretty much everywhere, and Crabtree has the most potential out of anyone left. Provides a great weapon for QB JaMarcus Russell, and should love getting paid the amount he will in Oakland. Oh...the Raiders.
8. Jacksonville Jaguars select Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri
I still see them reaching for a WR at the 8 position. Maclin was a very dynamic player at Mizzou, and that should be a great help for the Jags. They need a weapon on the outside, and he will also help out in the return game. Will look at Matt Sanchez as well.
9. Green Bay Packers select B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College
The Pack are a team that should have been better a year ago. Raji is a beast, who will immediately fill the NT spot in their new 3-4 defence. They will strongly consider an OT here, but I think they need to get a big run-stuffer if they want to switch to the 3-4.
10. San Francisco 49ers select Mark Sanchez, QB, USC
I really think Sanchez will fall here. He has been great at Pro Days, and the Combine, but his lack of experience will be his downfall. I think the Niners have the need for a QB, but I feel they should give Alex Smith another shot and hope to grab one next year.
11. Buffalo Bills select Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State
This is still a reach, but I expect the Bills to fill their greatest need. Maybe they trade down to get him lower and grab a few extra picks, but either way, they need this man. Pettigrew is by-far the best TE in the draft, and the Bills have messed around too long at the position.
12. Denver Broncos select Ray Maualuga, LB, USC
Call this another need pick. The Broncos have been without a stellar ILB for years, and now they can grab one. Maualuga is the best LB available at this point, and he should flourish in this system. He will make D.J. Williams that much better.
13. Washington Redskins select Everette Brown, DE, Florida State
Wow, the second best pass rusher drops this far? It could happen, and the Skins will not complain. After releasing Jason Taylor, they need to rebuild the outside of their line. Brown could be an elite talent, and if he drops this far, this is a steal.
14. New Orleans Saints select Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State
By far the best corner in the draft, and everyone thinks he goes here. Jenkins is a solid cover corner, and could start right away on a team that is desperate for pass defenders. Another guy they will consider would be DE Larry English.
15. Houston Texans select Chris "Beanie" Wells, RB, Ohio State
The second Buckeye off the board will fill a semi-need for the Texans. Wells is a monster, who will greatly complement Steve Slaton. Wow, what a tandem that could be. Another guy they will look at is Wake Forest DB Alfonso Smith.
16. San Diego Chargers select Brian Cushing, LB, USC
The Chargers would have loved to snag Maualuga here, but with him off the board, they need another ILB for their 3-4 defence. Cushing is a very versitile player, and could quickly become the leader of the defence. They could also take a look for a WR here.
17. New York Jets select Aaron Maybin, DE/OLB, Penn State
After getting little production from former first round rushers Brian Thomas and Vernon Gholston, the Jets need to hit on this one. Maybin is a hybrid rusher, and would likely excel in the Jets 3-4 scheme. But, like I said, they haven't had much luck with DEs, so they may stray away.
18. Chicago Bears select Michael Oher, OT, Mississippi
I hate to see a team take OTs in back-to-back drafts, but can the Bears afford not to? With Oher and Chris Williams, they could have great bookends for years. They may consider taking one of the many talented receivers left on the board as well.
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU
The Bucs are rebuilding their defence, and they need a young D-lineman that can play both positions. Jackson is huge, and can definitely move inside on passing downs. The Bucs are another team that could start a giant run of WRs.
20. Detroit Lions select Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois
Davis has moved up and down draft boards, but he may be the best athlete in the draft. The Lions have already done a lot to their secondary, but it is still an area of need. Davis will smarten up and lead the team in INTs this year.
21. Philadelphia Eagles select Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia
The Eagles would love a OT or a DE, but with most of the good ones off the board, they will "settle" for Moreno. He will provide a great backup for Brian Westbrook, and will become the RB of the future when Westbrook hits the RB wall at age 30.
22. Minnesota Vikings select Derrius Hayward-Bey, WR, Maryland
The Vikes got great value from signee Bernard Berrian, but they can use another speedster on the outside. The problem is: will they risk picking another Troy Williamson? Another option is DT Peria Jerry, as their Williams' aren't getting any younger.
23. New England Patriots select James Laurinaitis, LB, Ohio State
They could also go for a CB here, but they need to get younger at LB first. Laurinaitis is a smart LB, and would mesh very well with Jarod Mayo, who they took in the first round a year ago. If they target a CB, they would likely get Alphonso Smith.
24. Atlanta Falcons select Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina
A big, physical WR that will complement Roddy White very well. The Falcons made the playoffs a year ago, and with Nicks, they will be even more potent on the offensive side of the ball. They could also target at DE here, and Larry English would make sense.
25. Miami Dolphins select Percy Harvin, WR, Florida
The Fish have a number of needs, but I think the one that tops the list is WR. Harvin is a home-run threat every time he touches the ball, and would hopefully help Ted Ginn as well. If they stray away from Harvin, they could also benefit from a guy like English.
26. Baltimore Ravens select Ebon Britton, OT, Arizona
They would have loved to have nabbed Harvin or Nicks, but with them off the board, they look for the best player available. Britton would likely be a starter from day one, and would immediately make the o-line better.
27. Indianapolis Colts select Peria Jerry, DT, Mississippi
The Colts would have loved Lauriaitis to fall here, but he didn't. Plan B: get bigger on the defensive front. Jerry is a beast of a tackle, and will greatly help the rush defence. Also, he will hopefully draw enough attention to make Dwight Freeney that much better.
28. Philadelphia Eagles select William Beatty, OT, Connecticut
Tra Thomas is gone, and Jon Runyan is old. They need to get some new blood at tackle. With all the other greats off the board, the Eagles go with the steady Beatty. If not, they will likely look for a new starter at DE.
29. New York Giants select Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers
How could they not? With all the uncertainty surrounding Plaxico Burress, they will need another big, physical WR. Britt will be solid, and hopefully they can get some production from their other draft picks at the position (Steve Smith, Mario Manningham, Sinorice Moss).
30. Tennessee Titans select Evander Hood, DT, Missouri
After losing Big Al, they need to replace him. Hood is gi-normous, and that will mean a team will reach for him. How could the Titans pass this up? They have been very good in the first round the past two years (Michael Griffin, Chris Johnson) and get good value with this pick.
31. Arizona Cardinals select Leshon McCoy, RB, Pittsburgh
The Cards need to do something at the RB position. McCoy is the best on the board, and they would be foolish to pass on him. He would likely replace Edgerrin James, and split time with Tim Hightower. LB is also a possibility.
32. Pittsburgh Steelers select Jarron Gilbert, DE, San Jose State
The Steelers play the 3-4, and their ends are both over 30. Time to start building for the future. Gilbert is huge, and fits the needs that are required for 3-4 ends. They might also be in the market for an OT, but most of the good ones are off the board.

So, lots of changes, check back next week for more.

More games? What are they thinking?

The NFL is currently holding their Owner's Meetings to discuss many issues regarding rules, schedules and labour.

One of the many things that has come up thusfar is overtime rules. It seems they will not be making any changes, but some owners want to switch to the college system where each teams gets a chance to answer a touchdown. I think this is foolish. The current overtime system has been in place forever, and there has never been any qualms with it in the past. Until the Super Bowl gets won in overtime, I don't think this should even be brought up.

The bigger issue has been the number of regular season games played. Some owners like the current 16 game schedule. Some people want to remove some of the preseason games to make a longer regular season. Additional bye weeks have also been brought up for the longer schedules.

This is all ridiculous. The 16-game schedule has been in place for a long time, and again, there is no need for change. Maybe I just hate change, but I feel these moves would be bad for the sport.

First, if you take away some preseason games, it will take away from the time coaches have to evaluate players. Yes, training camp will still be in place, but you want to see your young talent in games, to see how they work and react. If they take away two of these exhibition games, it would take away many of the young stars that have developed in the preseason.

Second, if they only add one regular season game, that would mean one less home game for half the teams. This would cause problems between owners, as some teams would make more money. I just think the current system should stay in place.

As a fan, I would love to see some games added to the current schedules, but I wouldn't want these to take the place of preseason games. I just think the development and analysis that goes into these games would be too valueable to get rid of.

Couple all of this with NFL Europe going under a year ago and Arena Football down this year, and where are teams supposed to develop their players? There is no "farm teams" to send players to. Maybe it is time the NFL affiliates itself with semi-pro leagues to forma scenario like hockey or baseball to have developmental leagues.

Since the game was so exciting last year, they are basically spending this week searching for the most ridiculous things to change, just so they aren't sitting around doing nothing.

Mock Draft

It's time once again fellow NFL fans.

JVZ's first mock draft of the season. I know the anticipation must be killing you all, so I won't waste any more time.

1. Detroit Lions select Jason Smith, OT, Baylor
I know the consensus pick is QB Matt Stafford, but I believe the Lions take the safer route, and take one of the best tackles on the board. I was going to put LB Aaron Curry here, but the Julian Peterson trade put the ki-bosh on that.
2. St Louis Rams select Matt Stafford, QB, Georgia
Shocker of the draft, the Rams choose not to go with the OTs after Stafford falls to them. A risky choice, but he can learn under Marc Bulger for a couple of years before he needs to step into the spotlight.
3. Kansas City Chiefs select Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest
The Chiefs have made all of the right moves so far this offseason, now they take who many think is the safest pick in the draft. Curry fills a need, and immediately improves the defence.
4. Seattle Seahawks select Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia
With Stafford off the board, the Hawks fill another immediate need, which is a replacement for again LT Walter Jones. Monroe is very talented, and could fill multiple depth positions right away.
5. Cleveland Browns select Brian Orakpo, DE/LB, Texas
The Browns should stick to their 3-4 defence this year, so expect them to make a move for a solid pass rusher. Orakpo has shown great skill in workouts, and should greatly improve the defence.
6. Cincinnati Bengals select Everette Brown, DE/LB, Florida State
Most people say B.J. Raji goes here, but I think DTs are easier to find in the later rounds. Brown is a stud pass rusher who should flourish oppositie Antwan Odom. Also a possiblity is a receiver.
7. Oakland Raiders select Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech
General consensus pick for this one. Crabtree was a dynamic receiver in the Big 12, and with the recent flops at the position in Oakland, they will look to improve at a key position in the draft. Could be a great weapon for young QB JaMarcus Russell.
8. Jacksonville Jaguars select Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri
Some people see Mark Sanchez here, but after the release of Matt Jones, I think they have to re-evaluate their WRs. Key point...they don't really have any. Reggie Williams and Dennis Northcutt are the starters...Yuck.
9. Green Bay Packers select Andre Smith, OT, Alabama
They need some help at the tackle position, as they have lost a lot of talent over the years. Even if he doesn't start right away, he will be the eventual replacement for Mark Tauscher.
10. San Francisco 49ers select Mark Sanchez, QB, USC
With J.T. O'Sullivan gone and shaky performances from Shaun Hill and Alex Smith, the selection of a QB here would be a good one for the niners. Sanchez put up huge numbers last season at USC, but he was only a one year starter.
11. Buffalo Bills select Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State
May be a reach at #11, but the Bills have been lacking a weapon at the TE position for a long time. With the addition of T.O., the Bills could have an explosive offense. They could also go with a DE.
12. Denver Broncos select B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College
The Broncos have had a brutal defensive line for a long time, and Raji could help for sure. I believe they are switching to a 3-4, Raji will fill the need for a NT. He is a beefy run stuffer who could rush the passer in some situations.
13. Washington Redskins select Aaron Maybin, DE, Penn State
The Redskins picked up Albert Haynesworth to give them a dynamite defensive line. Then the boneheads released Jason Taylor. They need to get a new pass rusher with this pick. Maybin fills a need.
14. New Orleans Saints select Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State
The Saints are in dire need of DBs after the failed signing of Jason David a few years ago. Jenkins is the best CB in the draft, and he should step into the starting lineup fairly early.
15. Houston Texans select Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU
Many people see an RB here, but I feel Jackson would fill more of a need. The Texans are one end away from having a stellar young d-line, and Jackson would fit the bill. He is also big enough to shift inside on passing downs.
16. San Diego Chargers select Ray Maualuga, LB, USC
More productive than teammate Brian Cushing, Maualaga fills a need for the Chargers. With him in the middle, and the return of Shawne Merriman, should five the Chargers a very good LB corps.
17. New York Jets select Derrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland
The fastest man at the combine should step right into the Jets lineup. After the release of Laverneous Coles, the Jets are in need of a serious down-feild threat. DHB just needs to prove he can catch the ball consistantly.
18. Chicago Bears select Andre Smith, OT, Alabama
Character issues plummet Smith down the board, but the Bears will be overjoyed to get him here. Smith is a beast, but has struggled in workouts. Should form a solid bookend team with last year's first rounder Chris Williams.
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Peria Jerry, DT, Mississippi
After losing out on the Albert Haynesworth sweepstakes, the Bucs need another option at DT. Jerry would be a great fill in for the departed Jovan Haye. Should provide a decent pass rush from the tackle position. A steal at 19.
20. Detroit Lions select Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State
Freeman is jumping up draft boards, and after the Lions passed on a QB at #1, they need one here. Freeman has a huge arm,and is athletic enough to stay alive behind a porous d-line. A developmental project who will sit for his rookie year and learn from Culpepper.
21. Philadelphia Eagles select Chris "Beanie" Wells, RB, Ohio State
The Eagles will love to get thier new offensive toy here. Wells is a bellcow RB who will become a great complement for Brian Westbrook. Hopefully he can fix his durability issues, or he could become Correll Buckhalter.
22. Minnesota Vikings select Brian Cushing, LB, USC
The obvious choice would be a WR, but Cushing would fill a need as well. They have little depth in the LBs, and Cushing was very productive in college.
23. New England Patriots select Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois
The Pats need DBs, and Davis is a very solid one. Sure, there are some character issues here, but the Pats can control him. They would also love an LB here, and if a solid one falls, they will surely scoop him up.
24. Atlanta Falcons select Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina
Nicks has been jumping up the boards after impressive workouts. The Falcons would also love a solid LB to fall to them, but WR is a need as well. Why not add another toy for young QB Matt Ryan?
25. Miami Dolphins select Percy Harvin, WR, Florida
Let the run on WRs begin. The Dolphins have been brutal at the position for a while. With Harvin and 2007 first round pick Ted Ginn, the Dolphins could have a very dangerous receiving corps.
26. Baltimore Ravens select Eben Britton, OT, Arizona
Britton will hopefully take over the OT position in Baltimore, as they need depth and starters on both sides. This is lower than he is expected to drop, but a focus on skill positions gives the Ravens a great bookend for their line.
27. Indianapolis Colts select James Laurinaitis, LB, Ohio State
The Colts rarely spend early picks on defence, but this guy will be a great addition. Could become the captain of the defence right away, and fills a glaring hole in a up-and-coming defensive unit.
28. Philadelphia Eagles select Michael Oher, OT, Mississippi
Oher fills a glaring hole for the Eagles, who got their RB stud earlier. With Tra Thomas gone, Oher would likely step in right away. It is unlikely however to have this guy drop to them at 28.
29. New York Giants select Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers
The G-Men are in need of some receivers if they are to return to the elite, and the hometown boy from Rutgers would get a chance to start right away. But, there are many young WRs on the team, so they can't miss on this one.
30. Tennessee Titans select Evander Hood, DT, Missouri
With Haynesworth taking off, they are in dire need of a new DT. Hood is a 300-lb beast who could definetly step in and take over the line of scrimmage. If they can get him motivated as much as Haynesworth, he should be successful.
31. Arizona Cardinals select Clay Matthews, LB, USC
The Cardinals filled their CB need with the signing of Bryant McFadden, so now they can focus on a new pass rusher for their 3-4 defense. Matthews has the size and speed to take over for one of the veterans they have.
32. Pittsburgh Steelers select Jarron Gilbert, DE, San Jose State
The Steelers are getting old on the d-line, so they need to address this at the bottom of the first. Gilbert has the size and strength to step into the 3-4 defence and be successful.

Rematch in the Making?

It is very possible we could have a Super Bowl rematch in the making. Not Cards/Steelers, but maybe Patriots and Giants. Why? These two teams may be the big winners of the offseason thusfar.

First off, the Giants already made the playoffs last year. So, they haven't totally fallen off the map quite yet. Second, they have totally revamped their defence with the signings of Chris Canty, Michael Boley and Rocky Bernard. So, add these guys to the solid defence they already had, and bring back Osi Umenyiora, and they have a very solid team in the making.

The key for the G-men will be the offence. Will Plaxico be back? Do they want him back? What about Toomer? Too many questions for this team. If neither return, they will likely struggle on offence. That would move Domenik Hixon and Steve Smith into the starting roles, with David Tyree and disappointing rookie Mario Manningham. Yuck. They need Plax back at least, or a Super Bowl may be a very long shot.

The Patriots, on the other hand, did not make the playoffs. So why exactly do I see them making the big dance this time around?

The Pats made the right move getting rid of backup QB Matt Cassell. It is very likely he turns out to be a system player who struggles with the Chiefs. They didn't get prime value for him, but apparently they might turn around and trade the 34th overall selection they received for Julius Peppers.

Wow, what a move that would be. Peppers would likely play OLB on first and second down, than move back to DE in passing situations. That would allow Richard Seymour to move inside on passing downs as well. This defence could be dangerous with Peppers in the mix.

Also, the Pats have added depth at key positions over the past month. Joey Galloway is getting up there in years, but he still has enough gas in the tank to be a solid #2. Combined with Randy Moss and Wes Welker, it is very likely that Galloway could have an outstanding season.

Another defensive move they made was signing veteran CB Leigh Bodden. Bodden had an off year with the Lions...but who didn't? Bodden is a solid young corner with oodles of starting experience, and should really help the Pats secondary.

The keys will be getting Tom Brady back into his game, and hoping that Brandon Meriweather takes a few steps forward in replacing Rodney Harrison.

In other news:

- The Kansas City Chiefs have made a couple more solid moves as well. They recently added WRs Bobby Engram and Terrence Copper. Engram is getting up in years, but he is still better than what they had, and Copper is a solid veteran. That gives them standout Dwayne Bowe, Engram, Copper and the rejeuvenated Mark Bradley. Will form a sweet offence around new QB Cassell. Now, if only they could get Larry Johnson running again, these guys could dominate.

So Long, Farewell

If you thought last season was crazy, wait for what could be in store for 2009. Already in the league new year we have seen a number of prominent veteran players released from the teams that they have helped make famous. Don't believe me?

Marvin Harrison
Derrick Brooks
Terrell Owens
Joey Galloway
Torry Holt
Chris McAlister
Deuce McAlister

Get the picture?

It seems you take the best player from each team three years ago, and put that player on the free agent list. What a mess.

Speaking of a mess, how about them Broncos? Jay Cutler requests a trade. How interesting, seeing this all started because he was mad he was on the trade block. Hmmm. Both sides need to realize they need each other and settle this mess before they do something they will regret.

In other news:

- The Jaguars have released troubled WR Matt Jones. Jones, the former first round pick, was having a career year last season before getting suspended for off-the-field issues. Jones is a big threat in the red zone, and if he can keep his nose clean, could be a huge help for someone next year.
- The Lions seem to be making the right moves so far this offseason. Picking up Anthony Henry for Jon Kitna was a plus. Now, they traded over-rated DT Cory Redding to the Seahawks for LB Julian Peterson. Peterson will join Ernie Sims and Jordan Dizon to form a solid LB corps for the hapless Lions. Too bad they will likely screw the whole situation up by overdrafting Matt Stafford.

MOCK DRAFT COMING SOON

Why the Lions Should Avoid Matt Stafford

Here it is.

I have seen many mock drafts already on the net and in magazines, and the general consensus has the Lions taking Georgia QB Matt Stafford with the first overall pick.

I think this is a bad decision. Why? Over the last 10 years, there have been eight underclass QBs taken in the draft. Out of those, only two are currently starters on their teams (Aaron Rodgers, Ben Roethlisberger). Others JaMarcus Russell, Vince Young, Alex Smith) are still in the league, but have had little-to-no effectiveness.

The Lions need to make a selection that will help them for the next 10-15 years...and I do not believe Stafford is that guy. It might not even be an OT. I'm not sure, but for every Big Ben and A-Rod, there are a bunch of Tim Couchs as well. Not a good ratio to base the state of your franchise on.

Stafford could very well have a great NFL career, but I just don't see first overall value there. The Lions should wait until later in the first or even the second round to take their guy.

To be honest, I really don't see value in any of the QBs in the 2009 class. It is top-heavy, and even then, the only guy who put up huge numbers in college was USC's Mark Sanchez, but he was a one-year starter. Teams are going to reach for QBs, they always do. It will be even more this year, after watching Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco excel a season ago.

If you are the Lions, I guess you have nothing to lose. But really, why not make a pick that will save your franchise. Take a OT, and wait for Sam Bradford or Colt McCoy next year. I mean, the Lions will be selecting in the top five again next year. Am I wrong?

Bloggin' It Up

The moves are slowing down now, but there have been a couple new faces on the free agency market over the past few days.

First off, Orlando Pace.

Shocking? Maybe, but not really. Pace has been a rock on the St Louis offensive line for over 10 years, but let's be frank, he just doesn't dominate like he used to. Pace has struggled with injuries the past few years, so he was expendable.
This all but determines the Rams go OT with the second overall pick. Jeez, how do you manage to snag the second overall pick two years in a row? Anywho, Pace will now make a solid two-to-three year fix for a team in search of OT help. The Eagles just lost Tra Thomas, so maybe he fits there. Detroit is in need of a new team, and Pace could help. All in all, Pace shouldn't be on the market too long, after all, this has been a great offseason to sign aging veterans who are over the hill.

Also on the FA list is former Panther Ken Lucas. The veteran corner has some good years left in him. He is just past the 30 mark on the age bracket, and has been a starter for much of his career. While I don't think he ranks among the elite any more, he still can be a solid starter on many teams. Maybe a team like Dallas looks at him, but I believe they want to get younger at the position.

Latest Happenings

This week in the NFL we have seen some good, some bad, and now some ugly.

The Good:
The Chargers have agreed to a re-structured contract with RB LaDainian Tomlinson. After weeks of speculation, LT will still be a Charger for the foreseeable future. This has drawn the ire of some people, who feel LT has hit the 30-year old wall. On the other hand, he is only two years removed from an MVP season.
So, the LT debate will rage on. I feel it was a good move for both sides, seeing as Darren Sproles is not ready to carry the load for the team. Hopefully a healthy LT will complement Sproles better than last year.
The problem for the Chargers is still to find a solid WR target to take some pressure off Tomlinson and the running game. Chris Chambers and Vincent Jackson are solid enough players, but they don't command attention from enemy defences.

The Bad:
You wouldn't think signing an emotional leader back would be a bad thing. Ray Lewis was re-signed by Baltimore, which is great news for both parties. The bad part of it all is: Why on Earth did the Ravens sign the 33-year old Lewis to a seven year contract?
Silly move, but one that had to be made I suppose. Lewis is a dominating force still, but how long can it possibly last at his age? They are assuming he stays at a relatively high level for another seven years, and he will be 40 at the end of the contract. I just hope they left themselves an out after three or four years are up.

The Ugly:
The whole Jay Cutler situation is getting out of hand. Will they trade him, or won't they? Is he on the trade block or not? After yesterday's column about their shoddy running game, the Broncos do not need to get rid of their star QB and best player.
Cutler is the future of this franchise, but for some reason, he can't get along with anyone. I realize it hurts to be on the trade block, but honestly Jay, just play the game for the team you are part of. From the Broncos side, if you let it be known that he is on the trade block...either trade him or get him off there.
I'm assuming there is a market for Jay. He is a stud young QB with a big arm. What more do you want? If he does get traded in the near future, I see Detroit and Tampa Bay as likely suitors.

In other news...
- Derrick Brooks says he is open to returning to the Bucs at a discount price. He does not want to retire from the game, but there isn't much of a market for him right now. If the Bucs come calling again, he needs to take what he can get.
- Same goes for veteran WRs Marvin Harrison and Joey Galloway. There doesn't seem to be much interest in either former star. Both are getting up in years and have been hampered by injuries. Maybe Marvin should have re-structured his contract after all.

The Broncos Running Back Machine

Olandis Gary, Mike Anderson, Reuben Droughns, Quentin Griffin.

These are just some of the guys that were made to look like Gods in the Broncos running game. Was it a product of creative blocking? Or was it Mike Shanahan?

After watching all 0f these guys disappear into the oblivion after leaving Denver, it had to be one or the other. The Broncos have employed a zone blocking scheme for as long as can be remembered, but will it have the same impact with new coach Josh McDaniels?

McDaniels will start fresh this year, as the Broncos have signed no less than three RBs. LaMont Jordan, J.J. Arrington and Correll Buckhalter join the fold, with the likes of Selvin Young and the youngster Peyton Hillis already back there.

It's time to see if the Broncos can run the football or not. Unfortunetly, the trio they signed aren't going to cut it. The only one who has had any success is Jordan, and he is fat and slow. Buckhalter is injury-prone, and Arrington is a straight up bust.

I think the Broncos should stick with what they had a season ago, but contracts have hampered them now, and I expect them to struggle on the ground this year.

In other news...

- Mike Peterson has signed with the Falcons. This is a great move for a young team that has lost two of it's starters from a year ago. Peterson has struggled for a few years, but he wasn't happy with his situation.
- The Jags have signed OT William "Tra" Thomas. This should prove to be a good move for the Jags, as they lost former starter Khalif Barnes. Thomas has been a rock for the Eagles for a long time, and he is as solid as they come.

Eh-OH T.O.

Well, that didn't take very long. Only two days after Terrell Owens was released by the Dallas Cowboys he was snatched up by the most unlikely of suitors: The Buffalo Bills.

Owens now becomes part of a another dynamic duo at the WR position, as he will be paired with Lee Evans, a young burner looking to explode with the open looks he can now get with Owens on the opposite side of the field.

Lets take a look at the Pros and Cons of the Owens-Bills relationship.

PRO: Obviously the Bills get another receiving threat, and that has been a troublesome area since Eric Moulds and Peerless Price tore up the league about 10 years ago. Owens brings a physical element to the Bills WR position, and should be a nice complement for Evans.

CON: The off the field issues have to a red-flag for the Bills. They are a run-first team with a young QB, and that could lead to some frustration from Owens. Both T.O. and Evans are deep ball threats, and I'm not sure at this point if QB Trent Edwards can get the ball down the field well enough.

PRO: The contract was only for one season at $6.5 million, which is good value for a player like Owens. This means, should T.O. try to destroy yet another team, the Bills can choose not to sign him back after the season. Also, he could be traded at the deadline if there is a team in need of receiving help.

CON: Owens could throw Edwards under the bus, thus forcing the Bills to find a new QB of the future.

In other news,

- The Chargers and LT have yet to reach an agreement on a restructured contract, so one of the best RBs of all-time could be on the market very soon. You have to think there will be a bunch of interest in LT, but there are injury concerns as well. Apparently the Chargers want to lower LTs salary over the next three years, but Tomlinson has made it clear he wants to be paid more than Darren Sproles, his backup. Valid arguement. If the deal cannot be reached, you have to think the Chargers will be targeting a RB in the early rounds of next month's draft.

- The Arizona Cardinals improved their defence over the weekend, signing ex-Steeler CB Bryant McFadden. McFadden joins an already solid group of DBs in Arizona, and he should be a nice complement for second year guy Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. It will likely move Rod Hood into the nickle back role, which will suit him fine.
Also, expect Arizona to move backup QB Matt Leinart in the near future. You have to think there will be some interest in him as well, as he is still fairly young. The problem is experience, or the lack there of, that he has. Detroit, Tampa Bay and San Francisco may make offers in the near future.

- Speaking of Tampa, after cutting several key veterans, the Bucs have signed...no one. Big rebuild mode in South Florida it seems, as they have oodles of cap room, but have yet to make a significant move. They did sign Derrick Ward, but he joins an already crowded backfield.

- Finally, Brett Favre should be pondering yet another return. The Jets have bolstered their lineup, adding Bart Scott, Jim Leonhard and Lito Sheppard. Wth Favre, they are a Super Bowl Contender. Without him, they simply aren't. Could you imagine the AFC East with Favre, Owens, Brady and the upstart Dolphins. Jeez.

A Sad Day in the Dallas Cowboys Business

This is not the blog to read if you want to have me bash the decision to cut Terrell Owens.

I am sad becuase they cut my favourite Strong Safety Roy Williams.

Yes he did have the occaisional lapse in pass coverage, but it was pretty clear the Cowboys missed him in defending the run. I do recall a certain Saturday night game against Baltimore where the boys had two comeback efforts halted by long TD runs. Could Roy Williams have made those tackles...better than Ken Hamlin did.

Oh well, I geuss it's time to mourn the loss of another great Cowboys safety...like Darren Woodson before him.

Also, as if the two aforementioned moves weren't dumb enough, why not trade for one of the QBs that helped the Lions go 0-16 a season ago. When I heard the boys got Jon Kitna, I was OK with it. But, when I found out they traded Anthony Henry for him, that's when I got a bit perturbed. Oh well, why not blow up our secondary? Henry was supposed to be the missing link at safety, now he, Williams and Pac Man are all gone and there is very little depth in the secondary.

I like Keith Brooking, I really do, but he is just another Zach Thomas to come in and likely leave before long. It's about time they give Bobby Carpenter a longer look, but who am I to talk? Also, fellow LB Matt Stewart was added for more depth.

Hmmmm. A team now in need of WRs and DBs signs to LBs, a position where they were already loaded? Ridiculous.

Oh, back to Owens now.

Good move from a locker room perspective, but they will feel the loss on the field. Unless of course Roy Williams (WR) can step up after the massive trade a season ago. Also, fellow starter Patrick Crayton must get rid of his bad habit of dropping everything thrown his way. I do expect the boys to draft a new guy at WR, but I like what I have seen from depth guys Sam Hurd and Miles Austin.

This is supposed to be the offseason to rebuild and recycle spare parts. So far, we have only jettisoned Pro Bowlers and replaced them with aging LBs.

Oh, to be a Cowboys fan.

On another note...

Kudos to the Chiefs for becoming a contender. Yes, a PLAYOFF Contender. They needed a QB, they got one in Matt Cassel. They needed a solid LB, they got one in Mike Vrabel. Now all they need to make a push is Larry Johnson to shut his mouth and run the football. Oh, and another solid WR and DB.

Until next time...
