It is very possible we could have a Super Bowl rematch in the making. Not Cards/Steelers, but maybe Patriots and Giants. Why? These two teams may be the big winners of the offseason thusfar.
First off, the Giants already made the playoffs last year. So, they haven't totally fallen off the map quite yet. Second, they have totally revamped their defence with the signings of Chris Canty, Michael Boley and Rocky Bernard. So, add these guys to the solid defence they already had, and bring back Osi Umenyiora, and they have a very solid team in the making.
The key for the G-men will be the offence. Will Plaxico be back? Do they want him back? What about Toomer? Too many questions for this team. If neither return, they will likely struggle on offence. That would move Domenik Hixon and Steve Smith into the starting roles, with David Tyree and disappointing rookie Mario Manningham. Yuck. They need Plax back at least, or a Super Bowl may be a very long shot.
The Patriots, on the other hand, did not make the playoffs. So why exactly do I see them making the big dance this time around?
The Pats made the right move getting rid of backup QB Matt Cassell. It is very likely he turns out to be a system player who struggles with the Chiefs. They didn't get prime value for him, but apparently they might turn around and trade the 34th overall selection they received for Julius Peppers.
Wow, what a move that would be. Peppers would likely play OLB on first and second down, than move back to DE in passing situations. That would allow Richard Seymour to move inside on passing downs as well. This defence could be dangerous with Peppers in the mix.
Also, the Pats have added depth at key positions over the past month. Joey Galloway is getting up there in years, but he still has enough gas in the tank to be a solid #2. Combined with Randy Moss and Wes Welker, it is very likely that Galloway could have an outstanding season.
Another defensive move they made was signing veteran CB Leigh Bodden. Bodden had an off year with the Lions...but who didn't? Bodden is a solid young corner with oodles of starting experience, and should really help the Pats secondary.
The keys will be getting Tom Brady back into his game, and hoping that Brandon Meriweather takes a few steps forward in replacing Rodney Harrison.
In other news:
- The Kansas City Chiefs have made a couple more solid moves as well. They recently added WRs Bobby Engram and Terrence Copper. Engram is getting up in years, but he is still better than what they had, and Copper is a solid veteran. That gives them standout Dwayne Bowe, Engram, Copper and the rejeuvenated Mark Bradley. Will form a sweet offence around new QB Cassell. Now, if only they could get Larry Johnson running again, these guys could dominate.
